The Tranzit Group

Reuniting Kiwis since 1925

In 1925 Albert Snelgrove launched a fleet of grey buses under the very imaginative name Grey Bus Service (because grey paint was the only colour you could buy at the time). In the early 50's the colour of his buses changed, so the Grey Bus Service became Blue Bus Service.

Then in 1985, as the company began to gain nationwide traction, it became Tranzit Coachlines, and today it is the largest family-owned and operated bus and coach company in New Zealand, with our Head Office and The Tranzit Group proudly situated in Masterton, New Zealand.

The Tranzit Group of companies now encompasses the following brands:

  • Tranzit Coachlines: with depots in Darfield, Rangiora, Wellington, Masterton, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Taupō, Whakatu, Napier, Ohakune, Taumarunui, New Plymouth, Kihikihi and Cambridge.
  • Cross Country Rentals - commercial, industrial and small vehicle rental and leases with depots throughout New Zealand

A little bit more about Tranzit Group:

The Tranzit Group is New Zealand’s largest family-owned transport and tourism company operating throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand. For almost 100 years, it has held the reputation of being pioneers and innovators in the bus and coach industry and has no intention of stopping.

Tranzit is now in its fourth generation of operation, with two of Albert’s grandsons, Paul and Keven, at the helm and their children part of our senior leadership team.

These days we employ over 2000 staff and operate over 2000 vehicles from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

We have depots throughout the country giving us the flexibility to meet any transport requirement, big or small, all over New Zealand. We also run and own our workshops giving us a competitive edge over other coach companies, because we have all the equipment and trained mechanics, engineers and panel staff needed to service our fleet. Plus, our vehicles are regularly independently inspected by Vehicle Testing New Zealand to ensure they’re always in ship-shape condition. Year after year, we’re consistently given high ORS safety ratings which means we’re regarded as a safe and reliable operator by the New Zealand Transport Association.

Tranzit Group oversees a fleet of more than 2000 vehicles, 12 workshops and 15 depots.

To support our growing electric bus fleet, Tranzit has invested in and dealt with the energy sector and key stakeholders, including lines companies, to secure enough capacity to charge our growing fleet of electric buses.

This currently stands at approximately 4,200 kWh and includes:

  • two super-fast 450 kW chargers - one located in Island Bay and one at the Wellington Interchange in Thorndon. At these locations, our double deck electric buses can be charged from 20% to 100% in 12 minutes.
  • a total of 1080kW installed at Grenada depot, north of Wellington. Here, Tranzit worked with electricity providers, lines companies and major stakeholders to create the innovative laneway design at its Grenada depot - the first of its kind in NZ at the time. This allowed for future growth so that 48 e-buses can be charged simultaneously. Click here to view:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGIQAEjqckU
  • x2 1MW substations in Rongotai and Palmerston North
  • 240kWh in Auckland
  • 60kWH between Taranaki and Taupō

Tranzit upholds traditional family values. We’re honest, trustworthy and no-fuss, which means when you deal with us we guarantee you’ll receive the best service – and always with a smile.

We are incredibly proud of our Kiwi roots, so we felt very privileged when we became the official coach transport provider for Rugby World Cup 2011. Since then, we have been involved with major sporting events in New Zealand including: the FIFA U-20 2015 tournament, the 2015 Cricket World Cup, the IRB Junior World Championships, the 2022 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup and the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup warm up tournaments.

Both drivers, Bruce and Mark, were again outstanding in their work for Tranzit. You can be proud of the way in which these men behave and represent your company. They are always welcome to be a part of our teams! TARANAKI RUGBY LEAGUE
